- One of a uniform series of chronicles published under the superintendence of Sir Henry Ellis and others.
- The 1577 edition was compiled by Holinshed, William Harrison and Richard Stanyhurst; the 1587 edition was edited by John Hooker, assisted by Francis Thynne, Abraham Fleming and John Stow. The present edition, reprinted from the 1587 edition, with the excisions ordered by the Privy council replaced, was edited by Sir Henry Ellis.
- Includes "The description of Scotland ... by Hector Boetius ... Whereupon is inferred the Historie of Scotland," originally translated for the 1577 edition; also "The Irish history composed and written by Giraldus Cambrensis" translated for the edition of 1587.
