Melvill, Inspector, dated Feb. 25, 1801 regarding the importation of one hogshead of Catalonia wine pasted to the front free endpaper. Thomas Melvill was Inspector of the ports of Boston and Charlestown, participant in the Boston Tea Party, major in the American Revolution, and grandfather to Herman Melville. The "e" was added to the surname by Herman's mother after the death of her husband. According to Holmes, the poem "The last leaf" was inspired in part by Melvill, "the last of the cocked hats".--Cf.
