- Summary:
- Making England Western identifies the convergence between the British Empire's civilizing mission abroad and a parallel mission within England itself. Saree Makdisi argues that the boundaries between "us" and "them" began to take form at the turn of the nineteenth century, as England gradually came to be seen as a desirable Occidental space, connected with-but superior to-distant lands. The development of a new sense of cultural and national identity through this period was articulated in opposition to the perception of racial and cultural difference not just overseas, but also within the space of the nation-including among those who would only later be considered white, English, and Western.
