- Summary:
- Engaging with Learning in Higher Education satisfies a need for broader scholarly writing on an increasingly important and studied area of higher education learning, teaching, and quality assurance. It explores student engagement from a number of philosophies and contexts and provides a contemporary synthesis of practice and research on student engagement from various parts of the world, several disciplines, and across the lifetime of the student. Collected in one volume are a number of authoritative perspectives on the subject, some of which cross discipline and international boundaries. Based on previous empirical research of various methodologies, it draws together other phenomena not always recognised in contemporary student engagement measures and concepts, such as professional identity, and the support of non-standard entry students. Student engagement has become an increasingly important in higher education and this book reviews and challenges some of the current orthodoxies around related concepts and enhancements. Split into four sections, the book examines: the background to and nature of student engagement, related pedagogies, examples of students engagement in context, the implications for policy. The research, discussion and opinions will be of interest to educators, and associated staff in higher education institutions, researchers investigating student engagement and other aspects of quality enhancement and assurance, as well as those responsible for staff development and policy.
