Summary:
Cartwright's scholarly edition and translation makes the two Middle Welsh lives accessible to an international audience for the first time, showing Wales to have participated fully in European hagiographic traditions. The early development of the sources of these legends is traced in an informative introduction, and detailed comparison of manuscript versions of the Welsh texts from the mid-fourteenth century onwards shows how they were used and adapted into the early modern period. An introductory survey sets the lives in the context of the rich native culture of veneration of saints in Wales and offers the reader a point of entry into the fascinating field of Celtic hagiography.
