- Summary:
- Five years in the making, this handbook represents an ambitious international project and is a significant, timely contribution in a field ripe for development. Editors Roland Pfau, Markus Steinbach, and Bencie Woll--based, respectively, in The Netherlands, Germany, and the UK--introduce the volume, emphasizing the impact of sign language research on linguistics and its rich potential for further impact, and pointing out how active the field has been in recent years. They also itemize some of the topics that are not covered here, including, for example, Deaf culture, educational practices, sign language assessment, ethical issues, and cochlear implants; readers are referred to two handbooks that address these issues comprehensively. Organization is in nine thematic sections, each put together by a section editor. Forty-four chapters address the themes of phonetics, phonology, and prosody; morphology; syntax; semantics and pragmatics; communication in the visual modality; psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics; variation and change; applied issues; and the handling of sign language data. Indexing is by subject, sign language, and spoken language. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
