- Summary:
- Written as a core text for undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in the developmental biology of animals, this book by Slack (director, Stem Cell Institute, U. of Minnesota) differs from comparable texts by keeping model organisms separate in discussions of early development in order to avoid confusion, omitting discussion of history and experimental priority while still dealing with issues of theory and interpretation of evidence, and remaining focused on animals by omitting interesting but extraneous areas such as the development of plants or lower eukaryotes. This third edition includes new chapters on techniques for studying organogenesis and postnatal development and on applications of pluripotent stem cells; extensively revised chapters on tissue organization and stem cells and on growth, aging, and cancer; and a large number of new photographs of specimens.
