- Summary:
- In the politically polarized world, universal ideals are rare. In India, as in many places, at times the vacuum is filled by religious zealotry. But why? This documentary examines Indian patriarchy, machismo, and the attitudes they generate toward women and minorities in India, as well as the exploitation of ancient history, popular culture, prejudice, and religion by the unscrupulous for political gain. Violence--whether against women or members of other regions and religions--is embraced by men as a vital component of being "a real man." If the origin of violence against "the other" lays in male insecurity, itself a product of this construction of "manhood," where do the men of India go from there? Forward, or back?
