Summary:
How Important was Digital Media to the popular uprisings of the Arab Spring? An unlikely network of citizens used digital media to start a cascade of social protest that shocked the region and ultimately toppled four of the world's most entrenched dictators. Howard and Hussain find that while the economic, political, and cultural causes might vary from country to country, technology diffusion patterns brought about new systems of political communication with real consequences for regime fragility and opportunities for social movement success. This book looks at not only the unexpected evolution of events during the Arab Spring, but the deeper history of creative digital activism throughout the region. Book jacket.
