- Summary:
- Annie Zaenen's research has broadly influenced the field of linguistics from details of lexical representation to the architecture of formal linguistic theories. The papers in this volume reflect three major themes from her research: Mapping from arguments to syntax; views on syntax; semantics and beyond. These contributions reflect Zaenen's academic rigor and honesty, and her insistence that research must involve an unerring devotion to the details of the languages themselves and to the theories which account for the phenomena that those details reveal. Zaenen's seminal work on Lexical Mapping Theory, which governs the mapping from thematic roles to grammatical functions, is a cornerstone of Lexical Functional Grammar and has been a topic of active research for over twenty years. Her work on syntax covers a broad range of concerns from the fundamental role of syntax in the broader architecture of linguistic theory to the (non-) existence of traces and their role in word order constraints cross-linguistically. Zaenen's early work on mapping between thematic role information and syntax grew into research on the semantic representation of verbs, their arguments, and the events which they comprise, resulting in fundamental research on interaction of the lexicon, the syntax and then the semantics. Her work has played a key role both in the evolution of linguistic theory and in establishing the complexity of the data which must be accounted for. Book jacket.
