同性恋问题的研究是社会的热点话题. 以往, 学界对中国古代同性恋问题的研究较少涉猎. 自明以降, 由于禁绝官妓和女乐的原因, 男旦成为明清两代戏曲舞台的主体. 男旦演员走红于剧场, 也出入于茶楼,酒庄等场合, 替代女伎成为风月场中的主角. 文人与男旦演员的交往日益增多. 文人与男旦交往, 实际上类似于传统的文人与妓女的交往, 是诗,曲,酒相激相励模式的延续. 本书通过士人与男旦交往史的考察, 梳理明清男旦的发展史, 揭示男旦存在的真实状况. 全书分为三个部分: 第一部分探讨明代士人与男旦交往情况. 第二部分主要探讨清代士人与男旦演员的交往. 第三部分主要探讨士人与男旦交往对戏曲的影响. 自明至清, 男旦演员替代女伎, 不仅接过了女伎身上以艺娱人的任务, 同时实践着女伎身上以色示人和以色事人的功能. 士人作为亦娼亦优的男旦业的消费者, 从接受男旦艺术, 为戏曲表演的男色业买单, 为男旦业保驾护航, 为男旦艺术的发展进而为整个戏曲事业的环境建设, 作出了重要贡献.
