Summary:
As elsewhere in the Islamic world a stricter adherence to Islam has gained strength in Indonesia. Does the image of Islam in Indonesia as a model of moderation still hold? It is a topic of debate in Indonesia itself and abroad. This book is a reflection of this discussion. Besides contributions focusing on the specific characteristics of Indonesian Islam others deal with such diverse topics as Salafi groups and their propaganda, radio stations, Muslim transvestites, the pioneering works of Muslim feminists, and the debate about rules of inheritance and divorce. Book jacket.
