Summary:
The much-debated topic of gender in the Middle East has gained renewed urgency in light of the recent Arab uprisings. Live and Die Like a Man presents a unique twist on traditional notions of gender by revealing how masculinity in urban Egypt is continually constructed, by both men and women, and under changing economic, political, and religious norms. The product of nineteen years of fieldwork, Farha Ghannam's rich ethnography draws on the life stories and daily practices of residents in one of Cairo's low-income neighborhoods. Against a backdrop of individual experiences-work and community life, grooming, violence, marriage and fatherhood, and sickness and death-Ghannam introduces the idea of "masculine trajectories" to examine the various paths men take in pursuit of male social norms. By showing how men struggle to realize a "male ideal," Ghannam counters the prevalent dehumanization of Middle Eastern men and opens new spaces for questioning and challenging patriarchal structures of power and their constraining effects on both men and women.
