Summary:
The 2002 graduate textbook was developed from the manuscript text for a 2001 spring school on advanced electronic materials and devices for information technology, organized by several German universities. The 2005 second edition took the opportunity of reprinting to correct errors and make a few revisions. Here, about a third of the chapters are entirely new, and another half have been significantly revised to keep up with the volatile field. A stronger emphasis is laid on mesoscopic phenomena, quantum effects, and atomistic aspects. The areas covered are fundamentals, technology and analysis, logic devices, computational concepts and architectures, memory devices and storage systems, data transmission and interfaces, sensor arrays and imaging systems, and displays.
