Summary:
Kelly (U. of Wyoming) and Thomas (American Museum of Natural History) update again their introductory textbook explaining what archaeology is, who does it, and why anyone should care. It departs from many such works by focusing on topics of interest to young people, and grappling with controversial matters such as digging up the dead and climate change. Among the topics are the structure of archaeological inquiry, why archaeologists dig square holes, the dimensions of archaeology, reconstructing social and political systems of the past, and caring for America's cultural heritage. Thomas wrote the 1979 first edition; Kelly came on board with the fourth. The previous edition was published in 2010. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
