- Summary:
- On India: Self-image and Counter-image is a rich display of ideas concerning the locus of the major thrust of the Indian civilization. The chapters in this book turn an inquiring and critical gaze to the various images of India. Whether these images have been handed down from time immemorial or conjured in the comparatively recent phases of history or construed in our time, reflections on these enable us to assess and appreciate how the Indian civilization has been perceived by the insiders as well as by others. A cherished and a continuous self-image also implicitly suggests its counter-image as one to be shunned. In a search for self-image of India, and in the process of identifying implicitly or overtly the counter-image, the contributions in this volume draw from traditional philosophical texts as well as ancient Indian mythology where projections of profound cultural visions are rampant. Focus is equally made on a range of concerns that sway from historical analysis to current international diplomacy, from travelogues to Bollywood representations. Book jacket.
