- Summary:
- A progressive twenty-first-century politics demands a new narrative of recent American history, including the history of education. The authors of these chapters provide some of the elements for a different story. Without denying the dismal state of many urban schools, the stultifying influence of bureaucracy, and the inadequate preparation of a number of teachers, they offer a more nuanced account rooted in economic, geographic, and racial inequality. They highlight the vulnerability of teachers that underlies the formation of teachers' unions and the factors which make teaching a unique and difficult occupation. They give examples of excellent schools and successful teachers. And they use a metric that rests on a philosophy of education that embraces the civic, democratic purposes of education as well as the economic. Book jacket.
