Summary:
(Le Brasier ardent) When a French industrialist and his wife have marital troubles, a famous private detective is hired to get at the truth. Instead, the presence of the detective adds new and complicated dimensions to the couple's misgivings.
(Kean) Shakespearean actor, Edmund Kean, falls in love with a woman above his station, and as a result, his career begins to crumble.
(Feu Mathias Pascal) When his beloved mother and his beloved child die on the same day, Mathias deserts his wife and takes up a new identity in a new country. The authorities find a dead man in the local river and assume it is a suicical Mathias. Mathias, however, has become rich in his new identity, and when, years later, he returns home to make things right, he finds his wife has remarried.
(Gribiche) After seeing a young man in Paris perform an act of honesty, an American millionairess is so impressed that she offers to adopt him, take him to America, and give him the best education money can buy. The boy's single mother reluctantly agrees, but things do not always go as well as expected.
(Les Messieurs nouveaux) A ballerina with minor talents has to choose between a once-lowly electrician who has risen to political power, and the aristocrat who has always supported her.
