Summary:
From the co-author of Black Flame: The Revolutionary Class Politics of Anarchism and Syndicalism comes this concise history of the significance and global reach of mass, organized anarchism. Historian and journalist Michael Schmidt traces the movement from its syndicalist origins in Mexico in 1869, to Spain, from which it spread to Egypt and Uruguay by 1872, then to Cuba and the United States by 1883. He charts anarchism's dramatic rise to labor dominance throughout Latin America, and its radicalizing influence in Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Oceania, and Sub-Saharan Africa, identifying five "waves" of labor militancy that define anarchist organizing over the past 150 years. Schmidt explains the central features of each, highlighting anarchism and syndicalism's industrial and social foundations, and interrogating key documents that illuminate the vital relationship between the militant minority and the working and poor masses.
