Summary:
Collected Haiku of Yosa Buson is the first complete translation of the Collected Haiku of Master Buson (1784); included here as well are Yosa Buson's (1716-1783) innovative free-form haishi. W.S. Merwin and Takako Lento worked for nearly a decade to co-translate the poems, which are organized according to season and filled with resonant philosophical inquiry and wisdom about the natural world. Under the care of Merwin and Lento, Buson's vision emerges in an English as luminous as the original Japanese. His poems are sometimes humorous, Whenever I sleep, with my socks on, I have bad dreams, at other times mournful, I have brought the melancholy of my heart, up the hill, to the wild roses in flower, and always richly nuanced despite a seeming simplicity of surface. You break off a branch of holly to give me, I will not lose the red berries, of your heart, As Merwin and Lento observe in the "Note from the Translators," Buson "is uniquely carefree and unbound by convention, conveying the realities of life with immediacy and warmth." Their notes and commentary on the context of the poems - and on the collaboration process - make Collected Haiku of Yosa Buson an essential addition to the world's canon of great writing.
