The "Ystorya," a legendary history of Charlemagne in Welsh, was compiled from Turpin's Latin chronicle, Otinel, and Chanson de Roland. A transcript of the Welsh text was pub. in 1883 under title, "Ystorya de Carolo Magno. From the Red book of Hergest, Ed. by Thomas Powell"; it was intended to add to this publication a translation, notes, and glossarial index, but this remained for many years unfulfilled. The present translation, which is the result of a competition for the best translation of the Ystorya into English, is intended to carry out the original plan. cf. p. [v]-vi, 37.
