- Summary:
- This work offers new insights on Jewish-Gentile relations in the early Jesus movement. Expanding on current scholarship, it suggests an alternative account of the evolution of belief in Jesus. The rejection of Judaism by most Gentile believers and the rejection, by the descendents of Jesus' disciples and first followers, of Gentile forms of belief in Jesus emerge as the triggers of a defining crucible. This crisis, embryonic in Paul and in the Synoptics, became a protracted and bitter struggle about identity, legitimacy, and authority that burst into the open during the early decades of the second century and continued well into the fifth.
