Summary:
For high school students and above and for general readers, this three-volume reference presents discussion of problems that affect societies around the world along with efforts being made to address the problems. Editors Bates (California State Polytechnic Institute at Pomona) and James Ciment (author/editor) have aimed for a geographical balance, with coverage of both the developed and developing worlds. The 136 entries are alphabetically arranged, signed essays balancing historical and contemporary aspects and including references (print and internet resources) and cross references. They range in length from 2,000 to 4,000 words--depending on the topic. A topic finder in the front matter groups entries according to the following themes: crime and violence; cultural preservation and ethnic heritage; economic, financial, and trade issues; energy and energy-related issues; environmental and habitat issues; family, domestic and gender issues; government, politics, and international relations; health and medicine issues; labor and employment; law and law enforcement; rights; science and technology; and war and military.
