Summary:
John Quincy Adams was US minister to the Netherlands when he and Louisa met and were married. She was born in London in 1775, and her marriage took her to Prussia, to the United States, to Russia (1809), to Great Britain in 1815, and back the US in 1817, where her husband served as secretary of state, president, and then member of congress. Louisa was an extraordinary observer and candid writer, and these works vividly record her life and times and the character of her husband and others. Volume 1 of this two-volume set covers the years 1778-1815, with chapters titled "Record of a Life, The Adventures of a Nobody, Diary (1812-1814), and Narrative of a Journey From Russia to France." The second volume comprises her remaining extant diaries covering the years 1819-1849. The Johnson family genealogy is appended, and the volume includes a chronology and index.
