Summary:
"A curious little historical collection by the Lancashire poet and controversialist Cristopher Ockland (d. 1590?), sometime master of the Royal Grammar School at Cheltenham. The first work had appeared separately in 1558 but the last two are here published for the first time. There are a number of different issues of the same year, often with mixed sheets. The 'Praelia' is a history of England in Latin hexameters, from 1327 to the accession of Elizabeth, drawn from the Chronicles; it is mentioned in his satires by Bishop Hall. The second work in eulogistic terms carries the poem up to the present, i.e. 1580; apart from the life and deeds of Elizabeth herself, there is some account of prominent contemporary figures such as Burghley, Walsingham, Dudley, Knollys, Hatton and Nicholas Bacon. The final part comprises the story of Kett's abortive East Anglian rebellion against the post-Dissolution landlords (1549) drawn from Nevile. Despite the work's poorish Latin it met with Royal approbation. Each of the pieces has a title page so as to sell separately. The work was appointed by Queen Elizabeth and her privy council to be received and taught in every grammar and free-school within the kingdom, 'For the removing of such lascivious poets as are commonly reade and taught in the said grammar schooles'" -- Lowndes 1716. STC 18774. --Sokol.
