- Summary:
- Farmers are increasingly subject to regulations and standards for environmental protection, food safety and animal welfare. These regulations are necessary, but a concern commonly expressed by farmers is that compliance is costly and has adverse effects on competitiveness and business viability. As agriculture is increasingly integrated into the global trade market, different national regulatory compliance costs can have significant effects on trade flows. This book debates and investigates the cross-compliance system. It discusses cross-compliance in the context of existing standards, on-farm costs and the competitiveness of farm businesses. Analysing the economics of regulation both within the internal market of the EU and in the broader world market by examining a broad range of agricultural products, this book is a valuable resource for agriculture and resource economists and policy makers, as well as researchers and students in environmental and agricultural policy and modelling.
