Printer's device on verso of final leaf identifed in Heitz's "Basler büchermarken bis zum Anfang des 17. jahrhunderts" as no. 166. Device depicts the goddess Athena and her emblems as she stands between two olive trees, armed with a sword, a spear, and her shield (emblazoned with the gorgoneion) and accompanied by an owl.
Aristotle's authorship of "De plantis" considered spurious. Work is often attributed to Nicholas of Damascus.
Work is a compilation by an unknown writer at the request of the Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (912-945). It was based mainly on a 6th or 7th century compilation by Cassianus Bassus, borrowing from various sources. It is sometimes misattributed to Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus as well as to Cassianus Bassus.
