Summary:
Fitzherbert's updated version of Natura brevium, a selection of writs, with commentary, was based on the Registrum brevium or Register of writs, dating from the reign of Edward III. The first printed edition of Natura brevium was published in 1494 by Richard Pynson. Fitzherbert's Natura brevium, first printed in 1534 by Thomas Berthelet, came to be known as the New Natura brevium; Natura brevium was subsequently referred to as the Old Natura brevium.

Errors in foliation: leaves 164 and 186 not numbered; leaves 202 and 257 erroneously numbered 204 and 217 respectively.
Local Notes:
Culture Class Collection copy bound in full calf with blind-stamped panel.
Culture Class Collection copy imperfect: the preliminary leaves, including title page and final 7 leaves, wanting. Title taken from LC Catalogue 48:505, the collation, paging, and points of this copy agree with the LC description of the 1616 edition. A contemporary ms. title page, however, is dated 1620; the table and some of the final text are supplied in manuscript.
Culture Class Collection copy has three ms. inscriptions on front free endpaper: "Bought of Ann. Jones c/m", "Is[aac] Norris to Cha[rles] Norris 1746" and "Mary Norris to her Son Joseph Parker Norris 1788".
Culture Class Collection copy has ms. ownership inscription: "Jo[hn] Lawrence's book bought of Tho[mas] Broadgate price 3/6" on verso of front free endpaper.
Culture Class Collection copy has ms. ownership inscription: "Jo[hn] Lawrence's book" on p. 1.
