Summary:
The mausoleum honoring sheikh Abu-Said Abul-Khair from Mekhne, who died in the eleventh century in the region of Khorasan of the Gaznevid state (now Turkmenistan), became a destination for Islamic pilgrims for centuries. The ensemble shows eleventh-century brickwork forming an interior of ten by ten meters with niches and a dome; a reconstruction of the fourteenth century demonstrates that the artist-builders of the period were gradually mastering the technology of carved composite tile mosaic. The author points out the distinctive aspects of the architecture and its similarities to other Turkmen and Iranian monuments. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
