Biography/History:

16th-century compiler and arranger of Sanskrit works who lived in Varāṇasī. He is the son of Rāmeśvara Bhaṭṭa.

Summary:

Manuscript is a compendium and guide used for consultation by those wanting to learn the benefits (such as liberation at death) of visiting the pilgrimage center of Prayāga, and the rules and regulations (Hindu law, Dharma) that govern such visits. Text is part of a larger work called the "Bridge to the three holy cities" (Tristhalīsetu), which deals with three major pilgrimage centers in India: Kāśī (Varāṇasī), Prayāga (Allahabad), and Gayā.

Dated saṃvat 1914 (1857) (f. 47v); literally written as 19104, but sometimes the zero is added for the ten in fourteen when enumerating documents and should be taken as simply 14. The "9" is not an "8" as suggested in Poleman, as there is an added mark at the top of the character, which makes it a nine; similarly the paper quality does not suggest mid-18th century.

Mistakes covered over in yellow or blacked out; some corrections and additions in margins; significant syllables, words, or phrases highlighted in red throughout. Some folios treated with yellow turmeric powder.

Belonged to a single manuscript along with Ms. Coll 390, Item 278, Item 279, and Item 281.
