- Summary:
- This book presents not only a new translation of the original text with footnotes but a contextual selection of seven excerpts and letters as well as a section of criticism. Discussed and illustrated throughout is how the original text aligns with and prefigures the narrative traditions of self-discovery, immigrant writing, and magical realism. Alternative narratives and sequels are provided, as are contemporary accounts of the New World by Columbus, Cortés, and others. The section of criticisms includes narrative recreations and an essay about the expedition's difficulties regarding water. A chronology and selected bibliography are included.
