Summary:
Small-town beauty Agnessa Mironova-Korol was the fun-loving, flamboyant wife ofa high-ranking officer in Stalin's secret police. In her account of life in the Soviet ruling elite, she recalls the wild parties, frivolous fashions, and resort vacations as well as the darker side of the culture of Soviet elite which lasted through the 1920s and 1930s, until her husband was shot in a purge of party officials in 1940. A year late Agnessa remarried and two years later was arrested. She survived five years in the Gulag and still retained her charm and spontaneity. Agnessa's story was recorded by Russian writer Mira Yakovenko, Agnessa's friend for 20 years. The book was first published in Russian by the human rights organization Memorial. Agnessa's voice was augmented by Mira's interviews with other people in Agnessa's life, interspersed throughout the text, and translator Rose Glickman enriched the narrative in an epilogue with material taken from interviews with Mira, Mira's daughter, and Agnessa's adopted daughter. The book includes a timeline of Soviet history and Agnessa's life, and is illustrated with b&w historical photos from personal collections. It will be of interest to general readers, students, and historians. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
