Summary:

The PRC is led by a Communist Party, but it has rarely been systematically compared to other Communist countries. China is now awash in capital, but it is only infrequently compared to (or contrasted with) other capitalist countries. And even though non-state actors are increasingly politically active, their behavior is rarely directly measured against that of their cousins elsewhere. The methodological demands of studying China, and a widely held belief in China's distinctiveness, have long been part of why the majority of research on the country consists primarily of within-country analyses. This book breaks new ground by systematically examining China's capitalist transformation through several comparative lenses.

Composed of contributions from leading specialists on China's political economy, Beyond the Middle Kingdom compares China with France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa. Doing so puts the People's Republic in a light not available through other approaches, and it provides a chance to consider political theories while including an important case too often left out.
