- Summary:
- This collection at the British National Archives contains the primary census records for slaves in British territories from 1815-1834. The collection consists of original claims and compensation certificates, counter claims, and notices for exhibits and sales of slaves. The registries became the vehicle for determining slaveholders' compensation for their property when slaves were freed. The records are arranged by colony, and include information about the owner and slaves, the location, types of crops grown, and other information about the people and plantations.
