Summary:
The English constitute the major immigrant group in New Zealand, but relatively little has been written about their identities and experiences compared to other migrant groups. Fraser (history, U. of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand) and McCarthy (Scottish and Irish history, U. of Otago, NZ) introduce new perspectives on the English diaspora to New Zealand, placing their migrations in the contexts of the British Empire; concerns with recruitment; the impact of English traditions (e.g., drinking practices, customs surrounding death); and lack of classification as a distinct ethnic group, e.g., in the eyes of the indigenous Maori population, and in records of asylum patients. The work includes photos and supporting tables and figures. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
