Summary:
Challenges of displacement and insecurity that have accompanied Asia's growing participation in global capitalism have given rise to new ways of practicing and thinking about religion and cultural traditions. This resurgence of religion and tradition, argue Reuter (Asian Institute, U. of Melbourne, Australia) and Horstmann (social anthropology, Mahidol U., Thailand), should not be seen merely as a backward-looking response to forces of national and global market integration, but instead as representative of emergent cultural and political projects seeking to reconstruct the social order. They present 13 case studies examining local religious revivalist movements in Asia that focus on how those movements are responding to macro-level social, political, and economic change with their own agency and visions for the future.
