Summary:
Dugan (English, Oxford Brookes U.) traces the emergence of Emmuska Orczy's (1865-1947) play (1903) and novel (1905) The Scarlet Pimpernel from two of her short stories featuring plots against the Russian Tsar. The metamorphosis of her hero from a Polish anarchist plotter to counter-revolutionary English nobleman suggest a myth that transcends politics, she says, and indicates that a dialogue on questions of nationality forms an integral part of Orczy's work. She charts that dialogue from the its first appearance through novels and short stories published up until 1940; through film, a musical, even children's ballet to its reinvention in popular culture.
