Summary:
The period under consideration begins with India's independence in 1947, and encompasses the 1990s, the era of the country's economic boom. Three generations of painters have expressed and reflected the changing cultural and political landscape of India and the historical and global connections of its artistic tradition. This volume is organized in sections on those three generations, each with an introductory essay followed by focus on eminent individual artists. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts, this book presents works from the Herwitz Collection (which came to the Museum in 2001), along with scholarly essays by art historians based at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, New York University, Mount Holyoke College, and Michigan State U. Editor Bean is former curator of South Asian and Korean Art at the Peabody Essex Museum. The volume is oversize (10x12.25") and contains 142 illustrations, 122 in color.
