- Summary:
- The egregious dearth of writings about female friendships--sexual and otherwise--extends from antiquity to the modern era, from Aristotle to Nietsche, explains Legault (critical studies, U. of British Columbia). She focuses on her area of specialty, which is 17th- and 18th-French literature, to investigate and contextualize this phenomenon. Sandwiched between an introduction and a conclusion, the study is arranged in three chapters giving a historical overview and discussing the subject in the masculine imagination (from sexual fantasy to apprehension) and in women's imagination (the death of Prince Charming). This book is a greatly expanded translation of Narrations déviantes: L'intimité entre femmes dans l'imaginaire français du dix-septième siècle (Les Presses de L'Université Laval).
