Summary:
Bryson (English, California State U.) argues that John Milton held heterodox views about the nature of God, His relationship to humans, the fate of the soul, and their meaning for human politics. At bottom, Milton was an atheist in the broad sense that the term was in his time used to designated heterodox views. Milton scholarship, he also argues, would have none of this and instead insists that Milton simply doesn't have an agenda that's at cross-purposes with the Church. To this end, he offers an impressive critique of the dominant tradition of Milton scholarship that, in the unabashed words of C.S. Lewis, seeks to "prevent the reader from every raising certain questions...". This is an exciting reading of Milton's later poetry that is at once a critical examination of the invention of the politically correct Milton championed by Lewis and Stanley Fish.
