- Summary:
- Mueller (Colorado State U.-Fort Collins) and Siltanen (U. of Helsinki, Finland) introduce the computational and theoretical aspects of inverse problems, which arise from the need to interpret indirect and incomplete measurements. Solving an inverse problem involves implementing a computational algorithm that recovers useful information from the measured data, they say, and a successful inverse algorithm is robust against measurement noise, computationally effective, and mathematically justified by appropriate analysis and theorems. The first part requires knowledge of basic linear algebra and matrix computations, some knowledge of partial differential equations and basic analysis, and some programming skills. The second part, on nonlinear inversion, is suitable as a text for a graduate course in applied mathematics. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
