- Summary:
- There has been little public outcry in the US over modern-day human trafficking, even sex trafficking, because of perceptions that those bought and sold are merely undocumented workers in the country illegally, or simply prostitutes working across borders. Seeking to dispel such misleading stereotypes, this book reveals the reality of human trafficking. Although the book is written at a more advanced level, it is still accessible to general readers as well as policy makers and scholars. International contributors to the book include lawyers and legal experts, policy analysts, diplomats, journalists, victim advocates, policy makers, and academics in political science and sociology; many are residents of the US-Mexico borderlands. They situate human trafficking in the global context that is encouraging its proliferation and show how its manifestations at the US-Mexico border reflect regional conditions. They explore the coordinated responses in policy, law enforcement, and victims' services that must be used to confront the problem across communities and across borders. The cover features a color photo. Tiano is affiliated with the University of New Mexico. Murphy-Aguilar is affiliated with the University of Texas-El Paso.
