- Summary:
- From the invasion of Canada and serious debate over annexing it, to the battle of New Orleans happening two weeks after a peace treaty was signed, few Americans currently know much about the War of 1812. And although this volume certainly familiarizes the academic reader with the intricate history of the war, its focus is more on how some of the intensely debated issues of the time have survived to this day. It begins with useful explanatory notes listing the then current states in the union, along with the main political parties (Republicans and Federalists), and the major political movements of the time (Jeffersonian, Hamiltonianism and federalism). The editors, Nivola (Brookings Institution) and Kastor (history and American culture studies, Washington U. in St. Louis), each contribute a chapter of their own.
