- Summary:
- In this follow-up to Powerful Literacies (2001), Tett (community education, University of Huddersfield, UK) and coeditors Hamilton and Crowther gather international researchers and educators to explore adult literacy theory, policy, and practice in the UK and in other countries, such as India and New Zealand. While the book retains two chapters from the 2001 title, the rest of the book offers rewritten chapters, along with new chapters reflecting current scholarship and changing social, cultural, and political contexts. Part 1 establishes a theoretical and policy framework and raises awareness of the impact of policy discourses on the learning setting. Part 2 examines issues of power and authority in relation to literacy, such as disempowerment through official forms, and part 3 looks at ways to overcome challenges faced by teachers and students. Examples include survivors of institutional abuses in Irish industrial schools, and using sport to motivate adult learners. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
