Summary:
For nearly 40 years, field survey techniques have contributed significantly to understanding of the ancient rural landscape around the Mediterranean, and is now being used for large towns, cities, and ports of the Classical Mediterranean. Archaeologists from across Europe sample recent research into pre-Roman site planning, towns in a transitional phase, the Roman approach to townscapes, and inter-urban relationships. Among the topics are approaching the Sabine-Roman town Amiternum and its territory in the Upper Aterno Valley, strategies and results of the urban survey in the upper city of Ephesus, geophysical prospection in the Vesuvian cities, the Ammaia project's integrated approach to studying Roman towns in Lusitania, and forms of urbanism in the Ager Faliscus. Six of the 23 studies are in Italian. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
