In this study of how Irishness was constructed for audiences during a tumultuous period in Irish history, Chambers (film studies, University of Ulster, UK) analyzes positive and negative portrayals of Ireland in newsreels and shows how newsreel producers were manipulated by both the Irish and British governments. The book analyzes the content of the newsreels and explores the historical and political contexts in which they were produced, covering newsreel images of Ireland during the two world wars, the Irish Revolution, and depictions of Irish culture and politics. The book includes a filmmography of all Irish newsreel stories produced between 1910 and 1946. It is illustrated with b&w historical photos and distributed the US by ISBS.
