- Summary:
- Ferrone (modern history, U. of Turin, Italy) explores the notions of republic and constitution between the American and French revolutions. Taking Filangieri's (1752-88) The Science of Legislation (1780) as a starting point, he formulates some working hypotheses based on the achievements of the new cultural history of the Enlightenment, some themes and issues he has addressed previously. His topics include the critique of the British constitutional model and the political laboratory of the American revolution, the denunciations of the feudal monster and the tempered monarchy, the Neapolitan school of natural law and the historical origin of the rights of man, the republican and constitutional patriotism of Italian Enlightenment thinkers, and the liberal constant against the Enlightened Filangieri as two interpretations of modernity. Reinert is at the Harvard Business School. Distributed in the US by Books International, Inc. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
