- Summary:
- Hermann Weinsberg (1518-1597), a Catholic lawyer and city councilor in Cologne, Germany, spent 50 years compiling a diary, autobiography, and family history with many details on everyday life and major historical events in Germany in the 16th century. This biography of Weinsberg is the first English-language study of his writings. Author Lundin (history, Wheaton College) seeks to understand why, in spite of the fact that documenting one's life was not a common practice at the time, Weinsberg felt driven to record the historical changes taking place around him, as well as daily details on meals and neighborhood gossip. The study offers insight on the spread of lay literacy, bourgeois values, anti-clericalism, and the advent of print and historical awareness. The book includes b&w historical illustrations.
