Hingorani, an independent researcher/photographer (PhD, art history, U. of California, Berkeley), interested in Indian art, focuses on the intersection of geography, history, and Hindu-animistic traditions in the Kulla district of Himachal Pradesh in the lower Himalayas. Hingorani's color photographs and art images from the Franco-Indian Research Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art illustrate such major festivals as the Dashera. She discusses the creation of deity representations and objects for the festival, their symbolism, artisans, and Indian theories of aesthetics. The book includes a glossary and bibliography.
