Summary:

Dr. Henry Porter was only 28 years old when he became one of three surgeons assigned to Custer's Seventh Cavalry in 1876. Porter was the only one of the three surgeons to survive the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. This descriptive narrative recounts Porter's struggle to stay alive and to save the lives of others as he transported some of the wounded 700 miles by river to the nearest hospital. The narrative also sheds light on the development of battlefield medicine. The book includes b&w historical photos. Author Stevenson is an independent scholar.
